Intercultural Capability and Learner Obligation of a Learned Culture – Rowley, California State University East Bay
Typically a learner entering a new community or culture is not expected to reciprocate with the new community or culture. Non-reciprocation leads to uncertainty of a learner's role within the new community or culture. In this workshop, the presenter will present research and discussions on how to structure the entrance and journey of a new student into a new community and culture. There will be discussion about reciprocation and what is the role of student entering a learner community or culture. Values will be addressed and identification of the various types of roles students can engage in in order to accomplish intercultural competency. This workshop will allow for participants to visualize and apply techniques for future practice. Friday, 3 hours

 

 

We Are Not Broken: ASL/English Bilinguals Who Are Deaf – Horn-Marsh, University of Kansas Edwards Campus
Since the discovery of American Sign Language (ASL) as a full-fledged language, distinct from English in 1960, ASL instruction has been offered to the Hearing population as a World Language, overlooking and/or denying the Deaf population's unalienable human right to acquire and develop ASL as a Heritage Language. History of Sign Language use among the Deaf, Sign Language linguicism, and visual language research findings will be presented, construing why and how ASL is a Heritage Language of the Deaf Americans. Various ASL teaching approaches (maintenance, immersion, and prescriptive), and national ASL standards and curriculum clear the ground for the acquisition and development of ASL as a Heritage Language for the Deaf, ages 0- 21 and beyond. The Origin oflanguage is bulldozed by the destroyers when they colonized the native place. It has buried signs that are over 150 years. The language became powerless to stir the hearts of native people. They lost the freedom of beautiful language enforcing the abyss of an oppression. They adapted their new language into the native place. It leads me to explore the missing language which is hidden. The evidence of the native language needs to be recognized in the public record. I believe the recovery of native language should be recognized in the universe and respected. Saturday, 60 minutes

Ways to Create Interactive ASL Learning Activities Online – Umberger, Baylor University

A new age of learning allows teachers to create and facilitate their online learning environments. Online educational resources have the potential to provide an effective learning experience for students to master their skills and to engage in activities. Teachers have the potential to pursue technologies and techniques for interactive approaches and modify them in innovative ways to fit the needs of their own classes. By adding new developments to online classes, we can boost teacher’s effectiveness and use of online courses. Through an online interactive learning environment, students will learn a second language in its entirety. This presentation will demonstrate techniques and ideas for creating interactive activities using an LMS or App. Saturday, 60 minutes

 

Teaching ASL as a Heritage Language – Maisel, California School for the Deaf - Riverside

This session will discuss implications and strategies for teaching heritage ASL learners and will demonstrate some heritage ASL literacy activities to explore learners’ perceptions of ASL while raising consciousness about the presence of social varieties used in the signing communities. The study of heritage ASL strengthens linguistic and cultural heritage, maintains a valuable economic

resource, and promotes intercultural and cross-cultural understanding in ASL learners. ASL literary texts provide opportunities for classroom experiences, offer a rich source of linguistic input and can help ASL learners to practice literacy skills – attending, signing, viewing and published signing – in addition to exemplifying grammatical structures and presenting new spacabulary. Don’t wait to teach your students how to use the 5 Parameters. With current video and video editing techniques it is super easy to teach, learn and use the 5 Parameters. In this 60-minute session the 5 Parameters will be demonstrated with several live examples. Then a video presentation will be shown that also demonstrates how the 5 Parameters may be taught using advanced video techniques. After the teaching demonstration comes the grading and feedback demonstration that helps students become better signers. Audience participation to compare and contrast the benefits of both methods will be important to the success of this workshop. Saturday, 60 minutes
